yes, i really like the falling down original fence. thanks for the link to Scruton's article. food for thought. but i really like to ponder the beginning where it says "... you would have learned that beauty is a value, as important in its way as truth and goodness, and indeed hardly distinguishable from them." beauty as a value. interesting. my husband considers it an emotion. with beauty where we sense the integration of the world to us - like when we cry hearing a certain piece of Bach's music.

Yes, I think the bottom line, what Scruton is after, is that we need to seek for optimism. World is pessimistic place enough already. Beauty in art then can be like a smile on a face. More often we smile, more hope there is.
