Burg Rheinfels war bis 1277 im Besitz der Falkensteiner, später der Pfalzgrafen und der Staufer. Sie diente zur Durchsetzung der Rheinzölle, welche durch die Pfalz, die Zollstelle, erhoben wurde.

Hier legt der Raddampfer "Goethe" in Boppard an. Cochem an der Mosel, mit der Marksburg, ist auch eine wunderschöne Stadt.
