Note the slightly different shapes, presumably for the two different versions of the Saturn I which were launched from this complex. One of these would be rolled on rails to a spot under the circular opening in the pedestal to protect the area beneath the rocket's engines by splitting and redirecting the plume. There is a similar but much, much larger structure (now fixed in position) at each of the LC-39 pads used by Shuttle.
