Vor über tausend Jahren war Sigtuna Schwedens wichtigstes Handelszentrum und Schwedens erstes politisches und religiöses Machtzentrum. Deshalb liest man in Sigtuna oft den Slogan “Hier beginnt Schweden” (“Här börjar Sverige”) Das heutige Sigtuna lockt eher mit idyllischem Ortskern, Holzhäuschen, Souvenirläden, Restaurants und vielen Cafés. Die meisten Geschäfte und Cafés liegen in der Fußgängerzone entlang der kleinen Hauptstraße, Stora gatan.
