As the London docklands were supplanted by Tilbury and other ports, which could service the larger containerized cargo traffic, the replacement of the dockyard facilities, with housing and land-based commercial developments, was placed in the hands of the London Docklands Development Corporation. In trying to make the new environment as pleasant as possible for residents and workers, a fair amount of thought was given to the design of street furniture and the provision of open spaces and public artworks. This is an example of what could have been a simple drain at a crossroads in the park's pathways, that has been turned into an artwork.
