The West Bay side of the breakwater - Newhaven - 21.10.2014

When the prevailing south-westerly winds are blowing, this is the sheltered side of the breakwater. This Victorian structure at one time had railway track running along the left side. There are now no railway tracks to the west of the river. The breakwater, and indeed the whole of the West Bay beach to the left, are currently fenced off as the Port Authority claims the breakwater's condition is not safe for public use. Local residents have had the beach declared their village green. So one could ask 'When is a village green not green? When it's a sandy beach!'
There is an old postcard on the Our Newhaven website, photographed from a very similar location shewing the tracks as in 1902 at www.ournewhaven.org.uk/page_id__2195.aspx?path=0p69p74p
