Are coming to a colorful past -
W.J. Nicks General Merchandise Building [ built in early 1850s ] -
There are 5 steps up to the 1st floor -
Had always wondered why --
Found out since the building is undergoing re-hab --
Way back in the day, the streets were dirt, multiple steps were to prevent any wandering livestock from coming into the store !
Someplace in a local History Book I've read that this was the 1st gas station in town .. no pumps, but it came in a glass jar..
Three stories high, it became 2 stories when Hurricane Hazel whipped through in 1954 and the roof came off; walls were leveled to the 2nd floor and it became 2 stories.
Late 1990s and early 2000s , the building was braced with steel and a new roof installed .. again becoming 3 stories.
The interior wood floor and walls are now being re-done to welcome a micro-brewery and a restaurant.
I'll let you know how the food is .. am sure someone will give beer details !
The annex on the right, used as a laundry and more recently a barbershop has been removed for safety reasons. It is to be rebuilt.
Will ' watch ' this happen -- most is going on inside. I'll get the annex when they get to that part.
Photos as can get them. Expect things in front of the building that might block my view.. I'll work around it.
