Marble Grave Stele in the University of Pennsylvania Museum, November 2009

Marble Grave Stele in the University of Pennsylvania Museum, November 2009
Marble Grave Stele
ca. 350-300 BC

# MS 4020

In this relief composed of three figures, the heads of two of the figures have been lost together with the rest of the top of the stele. As preserved, the relief is uninscribed. A lady seated on the right clasps the hand of the man facing her, who probably represents the deceased. He is dressed in a cloak which leaves his chest and right arm bare. A third, shorter figure of a woman was carved in full frontal view between the two adults. The three probably represent a mother, a father and a daughter.
