Attic Pentelic Marble Grave Stele in the University of Pennsylvania Museum, November 2009

Attic Pentelic Marble Grave Stele in the University of Pennsylvania Museum, November 2009
Attic Pentelic Marble Grave Stele
ca. 375-350 BC

# MS 5675

Uninscribed rectangular marble grave stele. A seated woman faces a largely missing youthful male. The small piece of drapery preserved above the knee of the youth suggests that he may have been dressed in a short chlamys or cloak of the sort worn by men when traveling outside the house. The woman sits on a tall stool with carefully turned legs. She supports her feet on a low footrest. The scene may show a son taking leave of his mother, but with certain key elements missing, it is impossible to say which of the two figures represents the deceased.
