Sunset in the Catskills by Thomas Cole in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, June 2010

Sunset in the Catskills
1841
Thomas Cole, American (born in England), 1801–1848
Dimensions: 57.15 x 76.2 cm (22 1/2 x 30 in.)
Medium or Technique: Oil on canvas
Classification: Paintings
Accession Number: 63.271
Cole's landscapes portray its untouched purity as well as alluding to the potential dangers of industrialization. Here, the tiny figure in the rowboat has docked his oars to take in the surroundings. The unspoiled and lush woods are set off by the grandeur of the distant mountains, as the sinking sun lights the sky.
