Victory driving a biga (chariot) approached by flying Eros holding a wreath
Roman, Imperial Period, 31 B.C.–A.D. 14
Dimensions: Overall: 5.5 x 8.3 cm (2 3/16 x 3 1/4 in.)
Medium or Technique: Sardonyx, cameo
Classification: Jewelry / Adornment
Accession Number: 98.756
Sardonyx with three layers: brown, blue-white and brown.
Victory drives a biga to right; a small Eros flies above carrying a wreath. On the back, a graffito with the date 1496.
According to the Fröhner catalogue, the gem was mounted in gold in the 15th century.
