Tim tries to buy

At the French Market on Brunswick Lawns, in Hove. He's buying some very smelly cheese which he will later narrowly avoid forgetting and leaving in a tapas restaurant.

Since I've been flying so much lately (for which, as you may have read elsewhere, I'm looking forward to planting several trees), it seems appropriate that I see lots of aeroplanes from my window.
I love the sky in a similar way to the way in which I love the sea. I suppose they're the overwhelmingly big expressions of the basic elements of air and water. I must try to take some pics which express the same elements in their more microscopic forms — a droplet here, a breath there.

Peering over the parks and the trees, this is the bit of my view that reminds me I'm trying London for a while!
Not the most inspiring way to introduce it, but this is my new 28-135 mm zoom lens with image stabiliser, which I'm looking forward to experimenting with. Bought the thing in the USA for a ridiculously good price, courtesy of the exchange rate.

If you'd like to see the photos from my North American trip in chronological order, so my bloggish narrative makes more sense, then please view them through the set, here .

This is Bekah, an old old friend from waaaaay back at Sussex Uni, who I've just been visiting. In case you're seeing these photos in photostream (rather than recommended set ) order: I'd actually gone to Québec, but my tiny European sense of scale figured that it made sense to also try to fit in New York and Los Angeles...
Wine tasters
I didn't intend to look so smug

It must be the wine. :-p
One of the Firestone family's vineyards — this one is called Curtis, where they experiment a bit and the excellent wine is only available direct. We met some lovely people from Arizona who asked me which wine was my favourite and then swiftly bought me a bottle of it. Thanks guys!
Movie party people

I love the expressions. Dorf, on your right in the picture, was staying at Bekah's while I was there. Beba, in the middle, was about to go back home to Macedonia. This is where I met a guy from that country who had made a documentary about the place, one year on from some of the trouble there. I think he was really pleased to meet somebody who'd been to his country :)

I couldn't be in Hollywood without taking one touristy shot.
The twist is that Bekah knew him! That's what I get for touring the place with a movie producer ;-)

When I arrived in LA my cabbie refused to take me where I needed to go because he didn't think he'd make it through the 4th of July crowds. It was a blessing. I ended up getting directions over the phone, getting myself into Bekah's house, borrowing her bike, and cycling across Los Angeles and along Venice Beach, having never been there before, to find a party.
The perfect introduction to a new city :)

When one person in the shot is looking straight through the camera — and Maryse has the most amazing, piercing eyes.
With Éli & Anne-Marie, somewhat blurry, but hey.

Clean feet for health

In the United Nations there's an exhibition of paintings by children aged 7-13 from the Indigenous Community of Saint Rose of Huacaria, in the rainforest of the south-eastern Peruvian Amazon. They express what the children have learnt about health and hygiene — but it's fascinating that conservation themes like water preservation come into them again and again too.
This one is my favourite. And apparently that's Quechua, not Spanish :)
