Langstone Harbour.......the Wade Way

Langstone Harbour.......the Wade Way
Just to the right of where I'm standing (and out of shot) is the Hayling Island road bridge. The post in the shingle you can see here, marks the start of what used to be the only way of crossing (without a boat) between Langstone Harbour and Hayling island. It was called the wade way and it is now impassible. It is thought to be around 3000 years old.

This through your excellent images is becoming a favourite location, Keith,
I like your composition, the curved shingle bank makes a nice lead and the one legged birds add nicely to the scene, finally the haze across the water gives the image a real winter feel,

Have a great weekend !

Sinnbildlich für die untergegangene Bronzezeit. Jetzt ist es ein Vogelwanderweg ;-)) Sehr gelungener Bildaufbau. Anschaulich in Szene gesetzt.

Well, that's probably only thanks to the water. We had to replace a hundred-year-old roof because the wood was rotten. Nice picture.

Thank you so much David...........I'm glad you like the photo and the history behind it. The nearby pub (The Royal Oak) is reputed to have been a smuggler's haunt back in the day and this wade way would have been a route for moving smuggled good around.

Take care my friend and stay warm.

A fine shot here. Yes many of these cause way water-crossing have now disappeared due to water-level changes in our current climate. I see one can get to the Island over a bridge now! As said above -a lot of history here. Thanks for sharing.

Cheers. Herb

Thank you kind sir!

Glad you like the photo and the history behind it. It's fascinating stuff. There used to be a railway crossing to and from the island as well, which lasted from the mid 1800s until the early 1970s.

Stay warm and enjoy the rest of your weekend.
