Garden Spider (Arenas diadematus)

This is the commonest and most well known of the Orb Web spiders..........and I found it, funnily enough, in my garden. I would have liked to have got an overhead shot, but it refused to cooperate. The background is a rather grubby panel on the wall underneath one of our back windows,.
Best viewed large if you can bear it..!!
I normally have dozens of these in my garden at this time of year, but this is one of only 3 or 4 I've seen so far :-(

Keith Burton club has replied to Günter Klaus clubI agree with you that they are fascinating to look at.........but there seem to be very few of them around this year so far. I shall keep my eyes open. They're not as impressive as the Raft Spider in your recent shot though..!!

I found another crab spider recently........which I'll post a photo of this week sometime.
I like to see them outside the house
Keith Burton club has replied to J.Garcia clubWe have a "Spider-catcher"........which is a very small battery operated hoover with a long plastic tube attached........they suck up spiders we find indoors and hold them. You can then release them outside without harming them by simply turning the gadget off and shaking the tube clear. Ingenious!
