Let me use and English phrase here to try feebly to express my impression. Keith, this picture (and the other one that you linked) have left me UTTERLY GOBSMACKED! The picture is a wonder to begin with. But to realize that it was taken from the shore...that there was a jelly to photograph in the first place, and the fact that you got such a stellar image--and more than one in fact--I'm totally flabbergasted. It was perfect timing that my husband should enter the room so I could share the full size images with him as well. "He took these from the shore." *GOGGLE* "That is AMAZING!!" He was mightily impressed, and let me explain a bit more which will put this into even more clear focus for you. Steve is an underwater photographer and a scuba diving instructor. He's logged thousands of dives and though his experience as an underwater photographer isn't a LOT, he (and I) know just how special this opportunity was that you capitalized on so grandly! :D Anyway, let's just say we are both blown away and extremely happy to get the opportunity to see these fantastic pictures! :)

Thank you so much Janet..........I've never seen jellyfish this close up before, and never this variety. I was really lucky that the water was so clear and that I was able to photograph them from almost above.

My only experience that would come near to that comes from when I was in the Royal Navy and enjoyed a "Hands to Bathe" session for the first time. Oh Keith, I'm so glad you enjoyed my story! I have many amazing stories of scuba diving but that was a very special one because I was just beginning as a diver and some of the terrors were just being revealed and dealt with by me.

Thank you very much for the awesome link! I loved the article, pictures, and videos. I have never heard of "Hand to Bathe" though I have seen this portrayed in one of my all-time favorite movies, "Mr. Roberts". It is so cool and see you leaping off your ship in my mind's eye. What an experience it must have been! Especially because you were probably not a scuba diver and thus, some of the frightening aspects of being in the ocean would not be there. Did you get to do that many times? It had to be memorable every time. I know that each time I have splashed down off the edge of a dive boat, come up spluttering and bobbed on the surface like a cork--or not if my BCD (floatational vest) was not properly filled with air beforehand--it can be a bit alarming if there are any waves to push you around. But once we descend, it is suddenly calm and amazing down there...and thus begins a new cool experience...

Auch wenn man sie als Schwimmer fürchtet und nicht berühren möchte, so sind Quallen doch faszinierende Wesen. Sie sehen schön aus, bewegen sich elegant, bestehen zu 98% aus Wasser, haben keine Augen, keine Ohren und kein Gehirn, und haben doch viele Millionen Jahre überlebt!
Ein sehr schönes Foto, Keith! Ich mag besonders die Zeichnung der Qualle und die Blautöne des Wassers.

Thanks very much my friend. Apparently it can give you a seriously painful sting, but not life threatening unless you're elderly, very young or have any sort of allergic reaction. Luckily, I was not going to find out..!!
