P.S.How did you make the rich black background?

Basically you have to make sure you have some distance between the subject and background to start with. Then it's a case of adjusting the flash strength through trial and error, to get the background as dark as possible while getting the best light on the subject. In post processing I generally increase the black level to remove any thing visible in the background. You can also underexpose and then adjust the shadows and black sliders in Lightroom.
