This is a photo I posted in my photostream a while back (in color). I tried it in sepia via iPhoto (going from color to sepia) and thought it looked pretty good, but then read that you should convert color to black and white before converting to sepia so I went and tried that in PicMonkey. This is the result and is very different than what I got in iPhoto. I have no idea if it's "correct" or not so please let me know what you think. I really have no experience with sepia before this challenge.

Fabulous image Karen and it works really well in sepia. As for the process, I too read that you should convert a colour shot to either grey scale or B&W before going to sepia.

However, I have to say when i did it on my software it made no difference at all to the finished image. I also was amazed to learn just how many different interpretations there are to what makes a sepia shot.

My PaintShop Pro X2 creates a rather flat and dull effect whereas my Nikon NX 2 software produces a much stronger image with greater contrast ... what fun! :)

Thanks Paul. I think it's fun too. You just appreciate these effects so much by doing them this way. (You put such an effort into yours with a great result.) I forgot how much I like sepia until now and never even think to use it. I think I will now though.

The iPhoto version seems just a tad sharper. It would be interesting to see a slightly lightened iPhoto one. Sepia seems to come in many variations. Lovely choice of subject, Karen, very dramatic and interesting.

Great photo Karen! Love it! I found it's usually best to get the photo the way you want it to look in B/W before converting it to sepia. If you don't have a lot of tonal variation in B/W ... it rarely converts to something in sepia you want. It is usually best to save the image in B/W with PicMonkey and then reload it to PicMonkey before converting to Sepia. Some photos it really doesn't make any difference and others ... it makes all the difference! Lots of different shades of sepia and I usually use the tone which works best with the image.

The original is great! But I think in sepia one lost all the fine details on the sky. So, the bottom line of my critique is that I think this is maybe not the best choice of subject for sepia challenge =)
