Hairy woodpecker at his breakfast

As I type this, four hours after this picture was taken, the hairy

woodpecker and all the other birds that feed *directly* from the food

we put out have disappeared. They are no doubt hiding from the

sharp-shinned hawk who has been patrolling, hoping for some indirect

feeding from our feeders.
