View of Mount Shasta in the current drought, June…

This year, it was shocking to see a dark Shasta, almost without snow already in June, seeming much more solid, at once closer and harder to make out, brooding among the lower peaks. Okay, the flat, warm afternoon light (seen from the west) probably strengthened the effect; the difference was weirdly, profoundly disturbing.

For half a century, all summer long, I've enjoyed views like this of Mount Shasta, adorned with snow all summer long, bright and etherial in the distance. The sideways late-morning light (seen from the west) helped emphasize the constrast, but the mountain's sheer brightness was always eye-catching.
