An alternative view of the Falkirk rotating boat lift, opened in 2002 and replacing a flight of 11 locks that once stepped the Union Canal down to the level of the Forth & Clyde, more than 100 feet below. That saved manually opening and closing 44 lock gates a short trip that took almost a day can now be done in just a few minutes. Boats are lifted 35 meters to the Union canal shown in this image.
