The clothes, the pose, the windows and interior all speak of their time. I can imagine the street from where you took the picture: probably only a few cars, angled parking, awnings above shops, women with shopping baskets. (Probably none of these are really there, but it just feels like they ought to be.)

Thanks Old Owl. The suburb is probably more up-market than you imagine. You're right about the clothing, style of the shop, ladies & baskets, shop awnings over to footpath but it was all parallel parking. It was very perhaps almost totally Anglo-Australian. In the afternoons after school there were always lots of kids. The photo was taken standing on the road with a traffic button/silent cop just behind me and beyond that a road on a bridge over the railway. Look at the map location.I wish I'd taken more photos around there back then...
