Le watusi porte une robe rouge à acajou, plus rarement noire, avec des taches blanches plus ou moins importantes. La dominante reste le roux. Il ressemble, morphologiquement parlant, aux grandes variétés de zébu, avec une bosse (réserve de graisse) sur le dos. Ses cornes, en forme d'arc, peuvent dépasser 2,5 mètres de long (taille que seul le pelorovis éteint a pu atteindre parmi les bovidés). Un adulte pèse de 500 à 800 kilogrammes en moyenne et mesure 1,50 mètre au garrot. Il peut vivre 25 ans en moyenne. La gestation dure 280 jours, la portée ne comporte qu'un seul veau. Malgré son aspect de bête sauvage, il est en fait docile et très sociable, et vit en troupeaux. Watusi have a red to mahogany coat, more rarely black, with white patches of varying size. The dominant colour is red. Morphologically speaking, it resembles the great varieties of zebu, with a hump (fat reserve) on its back. Its bow-shaped horns can exceed 2.5 metres in length (a size that only the extinct pelorovis has been able to reach among bovids). The average adult weighs between 500 and 800 kilograms and measures 1.50 metres at the withers. It can live for an average of 25 years.
