677 Bloor Street West, Toronto

677 Bloor Street West, Toronto
The building opened in 1938 and was designed by the architects Kaplan and Sprachman. This shot was taken about six months before the theatre closed in 2013. It was then converted into a rock-climbing gym with retail in front. The marquee has been retained. Everything looks much spiffier today.

I recommend opening the full-screen view (click the pic, then click the frame at the upper right of the screen) and then clicking on the full-screen view to have a look at details.

That brickwork is superb and interesting in its non-conformity with every-day brickwork. That it now houses an interior climbing wall interests me as I used to frequent such establishments in London in my day.

Thanks for mentioning the brickwork, Andy. I'd just assumed it was brick veneer, but according to Wikipedia it's American or common bond.

I love the asymmetry in this shot, John. I find the composition is very effective due to the amount of rectangles contained therein. All the best, Joe

Thanks, Joe. Toronto is the City of Rectangles. Its architects have been fascinated by them.

An array of shapes; a plethora of fonts (including wonderfully missing letters - or should that be excluding); excellent tattiness (was it a theatre of a certain type? The pictures next to the name would seem to infer that). I'm sure it looks much spiffier now, but wonder how much "soul" has been lost. Bloody wonderful, John.

Yes, the shops in front now look uniformly slick, John. It has been described as a porn theatre, but with the ad for an Emmanuelle knockoff and the two genteel pictures on the marquee it seems like a throwback to the early 70s.

Thanks, Keith. As I was mentioning to Old Owl, this seems like a throwback to the erotic cinemas of the 1970s.
