If I'm being picky, I might have cropped it to 1:1 to lose the shadow area on the left, which is a bit distracting, but I suspect that's why you left it in :-)

I think both ways would look good - they would just have a different feel, more graphic with it cropped I would think.

my mother (long time photographer and daughter of photographer) always taught me that you can crop a good photo many ways and it will still be good - but you can't crop a bad photo and make it a good one.

This is a crop, Keith, of a wider shot with less shadow at the other end, and I tried a crop from that end, too. I liked them both, but preferred this one a bit more. Of course, if I had edited it at some other time I might have preferred the other crop. In fact, I hadn't posted this before. I must have found it interesting back in 2015 (six years ago to the day, in fact).

Come to think of it, the idea of a crop to square has suddenly become very interesting to me.

And all of a sudden I'm thinking a square crop could be very interesting. Further research is needed.

When I'm not sure, I usually shoot wide and decide later. I sometimes try two or three different crops and just look at them occasionally until I decide which is best.

I do that a lot, too, Keith. I picked that habit up shooting in the street, where often you can't get the shot you want because you'd have to walk into traffic. Jamie Windsor on YouTube recommends considering a crop every time you edit a photo, which I think is sound advice. And as Eugene Smith said, you can't expect the world to fit neatly into your camera's format.

Of course there is another camp that says to crop in the camera before you take the photo. There's something to be said for that, especially for someone like me who doesn't spend as much time processing photos as taking them. [Though back in the day, I did spend more time developing and printing than I did photographing.]

I think whichever works best for one's own personal desired result is good!

I haven't got beyond trying to crop in the camera, Laura. I stand too far back much of the time. It seems like a good idea at the time but I change my mind at home.

I agree with you about democratic photography, too. If I could get rich people to commission me, though, I might change my mind. Then you have to have a vision statement etc.

If it can be done with Campbell's Soup cans, why not wicker baskets? They do loom above (how else can one loom?) but should they fall,, injured dignity would be the probable result.

Is there a collective noun for baskets, like a pride of lions or a gaggle of geese or a murder of crows? I have a slim book listing those nouns, but it's disappointing in that it doesn't have a noun for a group of collective nouns.

haha - i love collective nouns. have a hard time remembering them, so i also have a book with some. perhaps we should coin our own collective noun for a group of collective nouns?

In Latin a basket is a sporta, so I suggest a sportion of baskets.

We're English-speakers, Bob. We can use whatever words we like. No Académie Anglaise for us (and no Office de la Langue Anglaise, which would be its Canadian equivalent). We say runners, you say sneakers, the Brits say trainers, and we're all happy.

really nice photo. i like it this way, though the suggested 1:1 would be okay as well, just different. i find the black doesn't take me off the image but takes me back to circling around the baskets.

Thanks, raingirl. I think eye movement -- ideally eye movement that helps you take in the photo quickly -- is what composition should promote, so I'm glad it worked for you in this picture.
