The nice thing about a slow spring is that the flowering trees and lilacs don't disappear in a flash, too brief to last. Just so the plants don't freeze. That's a trick that we used to see in Saint Louis - spring plants blossoming in March, and then two or three nights in the low 20Fs, so things would freeze. One year, the trees all lost their new leaves in spring, and had to start over.
Anyway, as the Earth warms, that might be a pattern we'll see. I hope not.

All the countries that border the Arctic are betting on the Earth warming enough to melt the ice cap so that they can drill for oil, so drastic changes are likely. Already the permafrost is melting, releasing methane into the atmosphere.

Usually spring takes about a week here. The leaves burst out of thw trees and the flowers out of the ground. Then summer arrives and the grass turns brown.

It looks lovely in the sunshine John...............it's nice to see the trees greening up and the blossom. That bench is perfectly situated to enjoy the view!

Our weather seems out of sync at the moment too. April is a rainy month normally (hence the term April Showers), but in fact we had very little rain. This month we seem to be having all the showers we should have had last month! The flowers in my garden are very confused..!!

Thanks, Keith. I sat on that bench myself on the way back. Luckily the British have far more botanical understanding than we do (you may remember Bill Bryson writing about how he was astounded by the gardening shows on British radio, where everyone calling in seemed to have a Ph. D. in botany) so I am confident you will weather the storm.

Actually, I was in England once when there'd been so much rain after planting that the seed were washed away and had to be re-planted. But they got a good harvest in the end.

I expect BB was referring to the BBC Radio 4 show Gardener's Question Time which has been airing since 1940. I often listen to it in the car when driving long distances.
