Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto

Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto
The sculpture is Henry Moore's Three-Way Piece No. 2: Archer.

The PiP shows another outdoor Moore in Toronto. The Art Gallery of Ontario has 900 other pieces by him.

The National Gallery in Berlin also has a cast of this -- the Toronto fundraising campaign fell short, so Moore knocked the price down in return for being allowed to sell a second cast.

The Didrichsen Art Museum in Helsinki has a much smaller marble version.

The sculpture had its fiftieth anniversary two years ago, Keith. Of course, most Torontonians disapproved of it at first. Too modern -- although compared to New City Hall it's quite staid.

Colour is what's needed at Nathan Phillips, Sarah. Plenty of curves there, but it's all concrete. If they painted New City Hall the purple of the bowl in the picture I could love it. Or at least the south elevation. The other elevations are unrelieved concrete.
