Cathédrale Sainte-Croix d'Orléans

La première église fut édifiée vers 330, à l'occasion de la découverte de la Croix du Christ par sainte Hélène, mère de l’empereur romain Constantin Ier. Un morceau de cette "Vraie Croix" fut conservé comme relique dans la cathédrale. L’édifice est achevé vers 450.
Au XIe siècle l'église est reconstruite en style roman pour en faire une cathédrale. Achevée au XIIe siècle, elle s'effondre en partie en 1227.
Une nouvelle reconstruction en style gothique est entreprise du XIIIe au XIVe siècle.
Presque entièrement détruite par les Huguenots au cours des guerres de religion, la cathédrale est une nouvelle fois reconstruite en style gothique flamboyant au cours des XVIe et XVIIe siècles, et le clocher, instable, est reconstruit et inauguré en 1858.

The first church was built around 330, on the occasion of the discovery of the Cross of Christ by St. Helena, mother of the Roman emperor Constantine I. A piece of this "True Cross" was kept as a relic in the cathedral. The building is completed around 450.
In the XIth century the church was rebuilt in Romanesque style to make it a cathedral. Completed in the XIIth century, it collapsed partly in 1227.
A new reconstruction in Gothic style is undertaken from the XIIIth to the XIVth century.
Almost completely destroyed by the Huguenots during the wars of religion, the cathedral was once again rebuilt in flamboyant Gothic style during the XVIth and XVIIth centuries, and the unstable bell tower was rebuilt and inaugurated in 1858.
