"Eyed" click beetle -- another view
Street textures
Every journey begins with a single step . . .
In the good old days
It's a male
Why it's called a "box turtle"
Taking a peek
Considering the options
Heading out
Considering a fallen tomato
Checking for the tomato's owner
Playing it safe
An alley in the rain
Red door or not
The best bubble I saw all morning
Harsh reality
Man with ears in room
Lake Hope, autumn, before sunset
Lake Hope, autumn, just after sunset
Reaching out
There be cat
June's grandmother's rose
Public workers. Idiots. But I repeat myself.
Not technically a motorcycle . . .
Jake apparently was here
Sunday stroll on Court Street
When good colors go bad
Bravehat
College: Do not enter
Someone paid no attention . . .
Pretty between ugly
The castle in The Plains
It begins
Woodland stream on an IR day

The Big Bang
Ready to fly the airshow
And, why not, same bird
A bird

"Eyed" click beetle

Saw this fellow, an inch and a half long, on the woodpile this afternoon and thought I'd make a picture. Those spots on his thorax are not eyes, but may be meant to seem like eyes so as to confuse predators. The click beetle is so called because of its powerful snapping of the thorax-abdomen joint which helps it escape predators in a bariety of ways -- and if it ends up on its back, it can "click" its way to rectitude. Its scientific name, in case you're interested, is Alaus oculatus.
Nikon D7100 with 55-300mm Nikkor zoom -- and I simply must learn to let the stabilization system settle down before I make the picture.
