Kolbeinn Erlendsson’s Mercedes-Benz coach R 364 on the F225 road in the Krokagiljabrun region of Iceland’s central highlands - 22 July 2002 (491-14)

Seen amidst past volcanic activity on road F208 between Frostastaðavatn and Landmannalaugar. Many lesser roads in Iceland are just gravel or dirt surfaced and in the highlands involve crossing stony river fords. As a result rugged high chassis 4x4 coaches are very common. Mercedes-Benz R 364 was operated by Kolbeinn Erlendsson based in a hamlet near Bólstaðarhlið about 21km (13 miles) east of Varmahlið. We spent one week touring on this rugged little coach and it turned out to be a comfortable vehicle to travel in. It still carried the livery of Guðmundur Jónasson hf from whom it had been acquired secondhand.
