Hen pheasant in defensive posture, with her chicks in hiding nearby
What a hen pheasant defending her chicks, looks like...I now know a hen pheasant has a couple of signals which her chicks understand from birth apparently; there is the "follow me" clucking, and a slightly more urgent note, which is "Danger: scatter and hide immediately." I was sitting at the bottom of the pond garden hidden amongst the trees, when I heard the gentle clucking as she came past within feet of me with her chicks scurrying along behind her. As soon as I moved to reach for the camera, her signal changed, and the chicks scattered into the long grass. She stood her ground facing me about three feet away, staring at me intently, and eventually advancing towards me hissing and spreading her tail to appear as large as possible - I retreated from a very brave mother leaving her to round up her chicks and carry on with their promenade.
