Fresh Lime mortaring to the stonework round the south windows of "The Dairy 1850".

The lime pointing will dry eventually to a near white. Various dye colour powders can be added to the mixture, as preferred. Various old recipes call for horsehair, cow dung and/or urine as additives. Lime mortar "breathes", whereas cement does not. Stone walls held together with lime mortar allow moisture to escape through the mortar. Old buildings are being vandalised by the use of cement in repair-work instead of lime mortar. The art of lime mortaring is being re-learnt gradually, as more conservation-conscious bodies are insisting on its use in renovation projects.
