These rises are great fun, aren't they. I have many fond memories of the Bingley Five Rise in Yorkshire which are very steep but not as long as this staircase. A great picture and information. Thank you.

Thank you very much John. I have not been there but have just looked it up and it looks steep as you say and really attractive. Thank you for that. There is something really fascinating about boats making their way through a series of locks. Some days we would set off with all good intentions of not stopping until we reached where we intended, but a 'quick' stop to see what was happening here would mean we lost hours here.

A great sight Carol reminding me of our exploration of the staircase. Some nice views of Ben Nevis from the top. It seem strange seeing a fishing boat going into the canal. I wonder if it was doing the whole trip to Inverness? Well done.

Thank you very much Herb. I know what you mean. It is widely used by yachts and other craft and we do tend to forget that it also an important stretch of canal for working boats, fishing boats etc.as it links the east andd west coast. The alternative is a long way around. We have seen new lock gate brought in via the canals and the old ones taken out again. I don't know how far the Alena was going but it was nice to catch her leaving Neptune's Staircase and to see both the road and rail swing bridges open.

Herb I though I had photos but can't find them but if you look up Lord of the Glens you will find pictures of this small cruise ship going through the Caledonian Canal.

Herb if it is of any interest to you the Alena is a scallop trawler registered at Castletown and from Peel in the Isle of Man. Her current location is in the Menai Straits. Thanks to Roger for the information

Thank you very much George. We have actually been on the road when they opened the swing bridge so were lucky enough to see from that angle too. If you ever get back there it is worth spending a bit of time there.

HFF and a happy weekend, Carol! It probably takes quite a while for the ships to go up or down.

Thank you Stephan. Yes it does take ages to go through all the locks but for crews of leisure boats who are not used to it the experience must be wonderful. The canal cuts through from east to west coasts and would cut out a lot of time if you had to go around so this is a huge benefit for working vessels. We have spent hours watching the boats along the canals!!

A wonderful and interesting picture, which I like very much!
Very nice composition, and of course it is a place that I know reasonably well now!
We had parked in the official car park and walked all round here, and even had a cup of tea in the cafe. Unfortunately no boats came through while we were there... So thank you for sharing this scene.
