Chilean border station on Paso de Uspallata. The flag is obviously suffering from the rough weather conditions up there. The PiP shows a little Chilean cat, warming up behind a window in the Refugio. - scanned slide, Minolta X700

Chilean border station and Refugio on the Andes mountain pass "Paso de Uspallata". As you can see, not much traffic up there ;-) The peak in the centre is Cerro Cabeza del Inca (4193 m). The summits right behind are Punta Desconocida (4360 m) and Cerro Alto de la Posada (4260 m). The PiP shows the Argentinean border station and Refugio. - scanned slide, Minolta X700

Mountain road - Paso de Upsallata

30 Jan 2000 45 17 370
This is the fantastic old road to the 3832 m high Paso de Upsallata, looking back down in the valley of Rio Mendoza. Only few people drive up this road, while the normal traffic goes on Ruta 7 through a tunnel. The pass has several different names, besides Paso de Upsallata also Paso Libertadores, Paso del Cristo Redentor, Paso Iglesia and Paso Bermejo. The road connected Argentina with Chile, but at the time we drove up there, the Chilean side was closed because of too much snow. The PiP shows the Chilean side of the pass road from Google Street View. scanned slide, Minolta X700

Cerro Aconcagua - 6961 m

30 Jan 2000 57 19 434
Aconcagua is a mountain in the Principal Cordillera of the Andes mountain range, in Mendoza Province, Argentina. It is the highest mountain in the Americas, the highest outside Asia, and the highest in both the Southern and the Western Hemispheres with a summit elevation of 6961 m. The two "peaks" are Cerro Acongagua Sur (6930m) to the left and Cerro Acongagua (6961m) to the right. The view here is from the "Laguna Horcones" (2979 m), so it's still roughly 4000 m up to the summit ;-) - scanned slide, Minolta X700

Parque Provincial Aconcagua

30 Jan 2000 20 10 223
The whole region's most famous park is Parque Provincial Aconcagua, home of 6962 m tall Cerro Aconcagua, the highest peak outside the Himalayas and a favorite climbing destination. Reaching the summit requires a commitment of at least 13 to 15 days, including acclimatization time. A part of Aconcagua is seen in the far background. The peak to the left is Agua Salada Norte (4375 m), the mountains to the right are above 5000 m. - scanned slide, Minolta X700
