On the way from El Chalten to Lage del Desierto. The mountain range in the background leads to Cerro Eléctrico and Monte Fitz Roy. The PiP shows the bridge from where this photo was taken, in the year 2015. - scanned slide, Minolta X700 (main image)

Ruta 23 - road to Lago del Desierto

Open Street Map is wrong here, actually it's Ruta Provincial 23, which leads along Rio Electrico north of El Chalten. The mountain in the background is most probably Cerro Aniversario. - scanned slide, Minolta X700

Morning in the valley of Rio Pinturas, seen from Cueva de las Manos upstream. In 2000 there were no tourists, no facilities, pure nature. In the meantime a visitor center and even a small airstrip has been built nearby. - scanned slide, Minolta X700

Cueva de las Manos

Cueva de las Manos

05 Feb 2000 23 10 306
Cueva de las Manos (Spanish for Cave of the Hands or Cave of Hands) is a cave and complex of rock art sites in the province of Santa Cruz, Argentina, 163 km south of the town of Perito Moreno. It is named for the hundreds of paintings of hands stenciled, in multiple collages, on the rock walls. The art in the cave dates to between 11000 to 7500 BC, during the Archaic period of pre-Columbian South America, or the late Pleistocene to early Holocene geological periods. - scanned slides, Minolta X700

Rio Pinturas - Cueva de las manos

Northeast of Bajo Caracoles, where we spent the night in a tiny rudimentary hostel, we reached this beautiful valley by Ruta Provincial 101. Many archaeological and paleontogical sites are in this area, e.g. paintings of hands, made by the indigenous inhabitants, 9000 years ago. - scanned slide, Minolta X700

After completing the "Ruta 41"-stream with photos from the 2015-journey, I continue with impressions from the 2000-trip. Looking back to the Andes range, driving to the small village Bajo Caracoles, hoping for a place for the night. - scanned slide, Minolta X700
