"SONG A YEAR AFTER MY MOTHER'S DEATH"

I allowed a small song
to nestle between my breasts.
It was furtive, a ground squirrel
ocasionally checking the wind.
I thought it could not grow
on wine and despair. It didn't.
On the one sunny day in a rainy month,
it basked.
It took on colour: peacock blue
shimmering like sunlit sea. I feared
it would strut. I watched
it fly forth
afraid of no one
but me.
///
"CANÇÃO UM ANO APÓS A MORTE DE MINHA MÃE"
Autorizei que uma pequena canção
nidificasse entre os meus seios.
Um esquilo, furtivo,
ocasionalmente a controlar o vento.
Pensei que não pudesse crescer
de vinho e desespero. Mas não.
Num dia de sol dum mês chuvoso,
estendeu-se ao sol.
Assumiu a cor: pavão azul
brilhando como o mar iluminado pelo sol. Temi
que pudesse desequilibrar-se. Vi-o voar
em força
sem medo de ninguém
excepto de mim.
