The inventive Romans cleaned their behinds with sponges. They tied them to sticks and then dunked them in a bucket of salt water. In the Orient, nomadic people used sand. And in South America, the soaked husk of corn cobs was used. The Germans, on the other hand, preferred straw, foliage and leaves.

Later, in the Middle Ages, moss or straw became the so-called "Arschwusch". And it wasn't the same for everyone: the rich treated their bums to soaked rags and handkerchiefs, for example. And for the four letters of a queen there was sheep's wool for cleaning.
