These two large flies appeared to be joined, as the took off and landed in synchronism, returning back to the same position each time on the pebble flat.

Thanks, Maria! They look like they might be in the Genus Thyridanthrax. Not something I can say that I am able to remember properly, but from my memory these flies were around 20 - 25mm wingspan, which was why they caught my attention. They were very fast, as they departed and arrived apparently instantaneously.
