Studied with Gustav Engel and Joachim at the Imperial Conservatory in Berlin, and later with Aglaja Orgeni in Dresden. Her first appearance in opera was as Aennchen in Der Freischütz in 1897 after which engagements followed in Berlin, Brunswick, Cologne and London. She was singing Cherubino in Marriage of Figaro, Nedda in Pagliacci and Eva in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg under Hans Richter (conductor) when Heinrich Conried (then the Metropolitan Opera's General Manager) heard her at the Covent Garden and engaged her for the Met.
Her New York debut took place in November 1904 as Cherubino in The Marriage of Figaro in a cast that included Emma Eames, Marcella Sembrich and Antonio Scotti
In November 1905 when she sang Gretel in the premiere Metropolitan performance of Hänsel und Gretel, the composer Engelbert Humperdinck was in the audience

She made her debut as a soloist in 1859 at the Theatre of Olomouc (Olomouc) in the role of Elvira in Verdi's "Ernani". 1860 she sang in Prague the Valentine in the "Huguenots" by Meyerbeer and Norma by Bellini. Berlin Court Opera in the world premiere of the opera "The Star of Turan" by Richard Würst in the lead role with. In 1863 she appeared at the Covent Garden Opera London, where she worked as Valentine in the "Huguenots" ,1865 in the London premiere of Meyerbeer's "Africaine" the Selika sang. In 1865 she appeared in Hannover and Hamburg. 1868-69 she undertook a tour of Russia, 1872 in Paris. 1872-74 North American tour there on the stage and in the concert hall the same success as in Europe. Returning to Europe, she followed in 1874 a professorship at the Vienna Court Opera. She guested on the German stage, in Brussels (1876), in St. Petersburg and Moscow (1877), in Madrid (1878) and again in the 1882-84 Covent Garden London.

She was educated in the main by Carl Maria Wolf in Vienna. In 1850 she made her debut as a soubrette at the Max Schwaiger-Theater in Munich. 1852 she came to the theater in the Josefstadt in Vienna. In 1854 she appeared at the Friedrich Wilhelm Municipal Theater Berlin, in 1856 at the Thalia Theatre in Hamburg. 1859-63 she worked at the Municipal Theatre of Riga, where she was active in the versatile opera, operetta and comedy. 1863 she performed in Berlin at the Victoria Theatre. 1865 came at the Vienna Strampfertheater a majestic success of the singer when she appeared there in the title role in Offenbach's 'Beautiful Helena'. Offenbach In world premieres of Johann Strauss operetta 'Indigo' (1871), 'Carnival in Rome' (1873) and 'Cagliostro in Wien' (1875). On 04.05.1874 she created at the Theater an der Wien in the premiere of 'bat' the role of Rosalinde; . She performed both as an operetta singer and as a tragedian. Sister of the bass Edouard and the tenor Jean de Reszke, She began her studies with her mother and with a Mme. Nissen-Salomon, and made her debut in Paris as Ophelia in Hamlet on June 21, 1875.
Created the role of Sita in Jules Massenet's Le roi de Lahore.
Josephine appeared with her brother Jean on the occasion of his debut; the two, along with Edouard, participated in the Paris premiere of Hérodiade in 1884. At the peak of her career she married Baron Leopold Kronenberg, and retired from the stage
