German Tenor
He was an early member of the ensemble at the Grand Ducal Court Theatre in Karlsruhe. He studied singing 1900- 1907. Debut 1908 in the role of Tonio in “The Daughter of the Regiment" by Donizetti. In 1909, he sang in the premiere of “ Elektra” by Richard Strauss at the Dresden court opera as a servant.After the WW1 he joined the State Theatre Stuttgart . Between 1922 and 1944 was at the Berlin State Opera. 1924-1931 he made regular appearances at the Summer Festival of Zoppot.In 1924/25 he sang at Covent Garden Theatre in London. 1935 he was appointed as director of artistic administration at the State Opera in Berlin. After the WW2 from 1946-1952 he resumed his singing career . 1952/53 he gave his farewell performance and withdrew from the public eye.Roles included Tonio – “The Daughter of the Regiment” by Donizetti, Mephistofeles – “Doktor Faust” by Busoni ,Diener – “Elektra” by Richard Strauss,Drum Major –“Wozzeck “ by Berg ,Asmodeus – “The Heart” by Pfitzner,, Hoffmann – “The Tales of Hoffmann” by Offenbach and Lucullus – “The Trial of Lucullus” by Dessau
