Three of the men on our trip had these long lenses. Once in a while I envied the shots they could get, but my small Nikon has just about the same range, and was a lot less to carry around. Just not the same sharp optics.

Serious hunk of lens, I'm sure his arms hurt by the end of the day and who knows what shots he got. No reason to be envious (well, maybe just a little bit ;-)

John, I've heard that Kruger itself is getting to be like Yellowstone - a long line of cars, and the animal will be gone by the time you get to the front of the line. This is a nature preserve next to Kruger, and private vehicles are not allowed. One must be staying there to be inside, and morning and late afternoon game drives are included in the price of the stay - unless you'd rather have a spa treatment.

The fellow with the camera was the only one of our small group (12 of us) who went with Pat and me on the hike in the bush with an armed ranger. Nobody else was game (pun intended.)

Excellent capture. With only a few exceptions our visit to Kruger was without crowds, and we all got to take as many photos as we could. That long lens is useful, but you need a lot of flexibility (wide/narrow, big/small) in your equipment. We'll be better prepared next time.
