Plutôt que de recadrer, mieux vaut investir dans un zoom plus puissant. Dès que l'on recadre pour "rapprocher" le sujet, il y a une perte irrémédiable de qualité. Pour ma part, j'estime qu'il faut limiter (voire s'interdire) le recadrage. Pour progresser, il faut se dire que tout doit être fait à la prise de vue. Le sujet est trop loin ?! Alors on se rapproche. Une photo se fait aussi avec ses pieds. Quant à un zoom puissant pourquoi pas, mais il ne doit pas être utilisé comme une paire de jumelles. Même avec un zoom, il faut se rapprocher au maximum du sujet. C'est la même chose en photographie animalière. Mais là, il y a une distance à ne pas dépasser pour ne pas effrayer les animaux. Mais ça, c'est un autre sujet.

Everything you say is true, and helpful. The photograph of which this is a selective enlargement is five years old and just rediscovered. On a whim I made the image you see above. It may have been a mistake to crop so hard, certainly on a technical level, but I liked the expression on the lady's face. Thank you for taking time to stiffen my resolve to improve my technique!

Thanks, Steve. I think this lock gate needs pulling at first, to provide space to get to the other side. But further observation is necessary to confirm my theory. Maybe some canal enthusiast will comment and clear up this fascinating matter.
