Ushers beer was brewed in nearby Trowbridge. They dropped the apostrophe from their registered name in 1951. This wanton act of grammatical vandalism turned out to be a bad portent. The business was sold, bought, reorganised, restructured, refocussed, and eventually closed. Apparently, despite running at full capacity, it was not "cost effective". The brewery equipment, mostly quite newly acquired, was sold for £1.5M to North Korea. The site was redeveloped into, inter alia, a Sainsbury's supermarket. Sainsbury's like redundant industrial sites for their enterprise - their Bath supermarket is on the sidings of the old Somerset and Dorset Railway at Green Park.
