Canon EF 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 Lens

Fashion photographer Erik Madigan Heck undertakes most of his assignments with just one lens: a Canon EF 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 released in 1987 and long discontinued. It is a push-pull design with an optical formula very similar to, if not the same as, the old FD lens of the same designation.
Heck believes the lens, which isn't in the best of shape, possesses a character that benefits his work. (My copy - pictured above - after being held together with sticky tape on the switch which was supposed to provide a choice of auto or manual focus has given up the ghost, so I understand perfectly the phrase 'not in the best of shape').

After some disappointments with replacement Canon EF 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 lens purchases on eBay I eventually found one in good shape save for a couple of scratches on the front element, which the seller had declared anyway. Scratches on the front hardly ever impair a photograph.
This lens was well reviewed in 'Amateur Photographer' of May 6th, 1989. The results showed central definition - very good; edge definition - very good; image contrast - excellent; and overall performance - very good. The reviewer found the performance was practically as good wide open as stopped down and that 'it is fully usable at all focal lengths and apertures'.
This lens predates Canon's designation of its best lenses as 'L'. But it might be within that classification if it was still in production.
