Those Gates

15 Feb 2020 6 2 216
The seemingly inexorable decline of these gates is a subject of morbid fascination. People pass by hundreds of times daily noticing to varying degrees the ineffable beauty of their final days, wondering if some human intervention will change the scene for better or worse. Meanwhile, I am compelled by forces I do not understand to record the changes, tiny though they be. Canon EOS 30D + 18-55mm kit lens. ISO 200; 45mm (72mm equivalent). 1/250th at f/13.

Magnet in the Mist

I am attracted to Magnet. Canon EOS 30D + 18-55mm kit lens. ISO 160; 18mm (29mm equivalent). 1/125th at f/7.1.

The Bridge Under the Bridge

23 Jan 2020 9 3 207
A testament to concrete. A salute to civil engineering. A hope that the structure will not collapse for want of regular and stringent inspection. An admission that I ought not carelessly photograph things at 1/25th unless I am feeling lucky or artistic. Canon EOS 30D + 18-55mm kit lens. ISO 100; 55mm (88mm equivalent). 1/25th at f/5.6.

Survival

22 Jan 2020 7 2 186
The site of which this is part is under redevelopment. How much longer will this wonderful example of decay remain available? I keep expecting it to be changed, or worse, to vanish altogether. As I remarked of this place on an earlier occasion, the seemingly inexorable decline of these doors is a subject of morbid fascination. Canon EOS 30D + 18-55mm kit lens. ISO 160; 35mm (56mm equivalent). 1/60th at f/7.1. I'm not sure that a camera introduced in February 2006 - and then only a warm-over of a model dating from February 2004 - has any business performing as well as it does. And the kit lens is supposed to be nothing special if you read the reviews but given enough light it does quite well.

Canon EF 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 Lens

24 Sep 2018 1 135
Fashion photographer Erik Madigan Heck undertakes most of his assignments with just one lens: a Canon EF 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 released in 1987 and long discontinued. It is a push-pull design with an optical formula very similar to, if not the same as, the old FD lens of the same designation. Heck believes the lens, which isn't in the best of shape, possesses a character that benefits his work. (My copy - pictured above - after being held together with sticky tape on the switch which was supposed to provide a choice of auto or manual focus has given up the ghost, so I understand perfectly the phrase 'not in the best of shape'). gizmodo.com/this-fashion-photographer-uses-only-one-beat-up-hand-me-1586569058
