Mind Your Butt

Mind Your Butt
Today's theme is grunge. This is a close-up picture, turned sideways, of my water butt which is very grungy.
The word 'butt' has many meanings. In this instance it is a cask containing two hogsheads. The English hogshead was first standardized by an Act of Parliament in 1423. I was butt a child then, butt I recall the subject being spoken of in the marketplace.
The word 'hogshead' derives from germanic languages. The English called it 'hogshead' because they preferred the resonance of that word to 'oxhead' which was the original word, arising from the branding of such a measure with the head of an ox.
So they didn't hollow out oxheads, or even hogsheads, and fill them with liquids or dry measures. That would have been gross. Even in medieval England they would have drawn the line at that.
Or would they ...

I looked in my (t)rusty Collins English dictionary (3rd ed. 1991) and grunge wasn't there. In the 1992 Oxford Dictionary of Slang, it's "Something or someone repugnant or odious, unpleasant or dull; also, dirt, grime."

I think the meaning has shifted over time to have some more positive connotations: grunge as sludgy rock and roll, a style of being and dressing, maybe post-punk. At the same time I think "a grunge" means someone slaving at a poorly paid, crappy job.

The photograph is "grungy" in a visual/musical sense. It has colours and a kind of energy that I find appealing, but, then, I'm just a late middle-aged grungehead.
