Today's theme is grunge. This is a close-up picture, turned sideways, of my water butt which is very grungy. The word 'butt' has many meanings. In this instance it is a cask containing two hogsheads. The English hogshead was first standardized by an Act of Parliament in 1423. I was butt a child then, butt I recall the subject being spoken of in the marketplace. The word 'hogshead' derives from germanic languages. The English called it 'hogshead' because they preferred the resonance of that word to 'oxhead' which was the original word, arising from the branding of such a measure with the head of an ox. So they didn't hollow out oxheads, or even hogsheads, and fill them with liquids or dry measures. That would have been gross. Even in medieval England they would have drawn the line at that.
