I used a Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6 G lens on a Nikon D90. It was set at 70mm and the camera at f/8. This is a surprisingly capable lens within certain limitations, and it is certainly cheap enough to buy secondhand. It's light in weight too, for a day trip. With bright light, using a small aperture, and at modest telephoto, it seems to work quite well.
