Garton on the Wolds – St. Michael and All Angels

Garton on the Wolds – St. Michael and All Angels
The Church of St. Michael and All Angels is a Norman-style church built in 1132 by the Prior of Kirkham Abbey. Further work was carried out in the 14th and 15th centuries.

In the 19th century, the church fell into disrepair, and Sir Tatton Sykes IV commissioned a complete restoration. In 1865, he had the interior remodeled. The result is Victorian murals that cover almost the entire church space and depict a series of scenes from the Bible. Because it was late and the church was already locked, we were unable to see them.

The church is built of sandstone. The first two storeys of the three-storey tower date from the original 12th century construction. The top storey is later, from the 15th century in a Perpendicular style.
