Loch Duich - Eilean Donan Castle

This is a castle near Dornie. The name refers to St. Donnán of Eigg, a Celtic martyr from the 6th century. Eilean Donan Castle is located on Loch Duich on a small headland that becomes a tidal island at high tide. It can then only be reached by a stone footbridge. The castle is the ancestral home of the Scottish Macrae clan.
Construction of the castle began around 1220 as a defense against Viking raids. In the winter of 1307/08, Eilean Donan Castle served as a refuge for Robert the Bruce when he was fleeing from the English in the First War of Scottish Independence.
