Lake Ohrid

Lake Ohrid lies on the mountainous border between the south-western part of North Macedonia and eastern Albania. With a depth of 288 metres, it is one of the deepest lakes in Europe with a unique aquatic ecosystem, in which more than 200 endemic species can be found. Lake Ohrid is also the oldest known surviving lake in Europe. Its age is estimated at 1.36 million years.
Remains of Neolithic pile dwellings dating back to around 6000 BC have been found in Lake Ohrid.
Both the North Macedonian and Albanian sides of Lake Ohrid were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1979. The still pristine lake environment, make the area around Lake Ohrid a prime site for tourism.
